Dirty Gweilo Racing’s Chris Shire has taken pole position for the final race of the RF2 Asia World Tour Series 2018. In a final qualifying hour that saw Anbu Racing’s alien driver Alexis Clapano challenge for the overall top spot in his GTE entry, Shire had to pull everything out all the stops to set a time in his Norma LMP3. “This track is a tricky bastard,” Shire said after qualifying, although clearly elated. The race tomorrow promises to be a real test of driver skill and concentration as they battle the narrow straights, tight turns and extreme bumps and undulations of the low grip street circuit. There is no guarantee that the pole sitter will be in the same position at the end of the hour long event, just finishing will be quite the achievement.
Alexis Clapano will line up behind Shire, crucially ahead of the other LMP3 competition. GTE series leader Pol Faustino has not been able to set a qualifying time and will face an up hill battle in the race. It is crucial for Faustino that he get on terms with Hong Kong Sim Racing’s Edmund Wong who will take to the grid several places in front of him. Wong feasibly could steal the series title from Faustino if he were to score 10 points or more with Faustino unable to score.
Drivers are reminded that this race will be slightly different from previous events. The Race will be 1 hour and fuel and tyre wear is set to 2x.
The final round of the RF2 Asia World Tour Series at Maastricht will start at 10:00 UTC+0 on 7th October 2018. Current standings for the series can be found here.
